Does your headline reflect the whole picture

Include all the dimensions of your professional expertise in your profile. Here is your Sunday issue of WINS List.

Does your headline reflect the whole picture?

Now that so much of our presence exists on social platforms, it’s important that we’re conveying ourselves accurately. On LinkedIn and other social platforms, our first and sometimes only opportunity to do this is in the line that sits under our profile photo. I like to refer to this as your headline.

There are two main reasons why I stress the importance of your headline.

Reason one. Your headline is the first thing people see in any engagement you make online. Most of the time, it’s the only thing they see. On LinkedIn, your every like, comment or share is accompanied by your headshot and headline. In most cases, this is the long and short of how you’re being seen by others from a professional lens.

The second reason I stress the importance of a well-constructed headline is for searchability.

When someone searches a topic or expertise, you want your name to rise to the top of that search. I go back to LinkedIn on this, and I encourage you to test this out. Go into the search bar on LinkedIn and enter a keyword or topic. What comes up in the feed? Who comes up? Do you come up as an expert in your field? If you simply have your title listed below your photo, it’s not likely that you’re coming up in a topical search.

Your headline informs search results. Period. It’s not the only thing that matters, but it’s a very important piece of your search strategy.

In my Ultimate Guide to Establishing Your Personal Brand on LinkedIn, I offer a worksheet to help you construct a highly searchable headline that is a complete and accurate reflection of you. If you have not yet downloaded the guide, I highly recommend it.
